Check your AI visibility: 5 gaps ChatGPT finds on your website
Five places where small-business websites stay unclear to AI systems. Each one comes with a self-test you can run without a tool.
The short answer
When ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews skip your business, your website is usually missing machine-readable statements about what you do, where you work and what it costs.
AI systems read structure. They rarely guess. If your service appears only in a paragraph on the homepage, it stays an assumption. Put it in JSON-LD as well, in an FAQ, and in a file that summarises your scope, and it turns into a statement a system can quote.
Gap 1: There is no llms.txt
This file sits in the root of your domain and describes in plain text which pages exist and what you offer. It takes you twenty minutes and answers the question an AI system would otherwise have to assemble from ten subpages.
Self-test: Open your-domain.com/llms.txt. If you get an error page, you found the gap.
Gap 2: Visible questions without FAQPage schema
Plenty of websites have an FAQ section that only humans see. The schema is missing, or it exists and holds different questions than the page. Either way your statements weaken, because a system finds two versions and trusts neither.
Self-test: Paste the URL into Google's Rich Results Test. If no FAQPage entry shows up while questions sit on the page, bring the two into line.
Gap 3: The answer sits below three paragraphs of introduction
A workshop in Mainz describes its history, then the team, then its values. The sentence about what it does and for whom arrives in the fourth paragraph. Anything that summarises grabs the first clear sentence. When nothing usable sits there, the page drops out of the answer.
Self-test: Read the first two sentences of your most important page out loud. Do they name the service and the audience? If not, write one sentence that does.
Gap 4: Who you are is nowhere machine-readable
Name, location, service type and contact details belong in JSON-LD, in the same form as in your legal notice and your Google Business Profile. When your company name is spelled slightly differently in three places, a system ends up with three candidates instead of one business.
Self-test: Compare spelling, address and phone number across your website, your legal notice and your Google profile. Note every mismatch.
Gap 5: No price on the page
I see this gap most often, and it costs the most. An AI system comparing two providers describes the one that states scope and price. The other stays a website with a contact form.
On this site the packages carry a price, and the same price sits in Offer schema. A starting price or a range is enough when you cannot know every case in advance.
Self-test: Can a prospect work out whether they can afford you without calling? If not, a number is missing.
What this work does not do
Nobody can promise you a mention in ChatGPT, and I will not either. Structure improves the conditions. Whether a system names you in a given answer is its own decision, and the rules keep changing.
What stays checkable is the state of your page: schema without errors, llms.txt in place, answers near the top, statements consistent, prices visible. You can compare those five points before and after.
The order to work in
- Write the first clear sentence on your most important page.
- Bring visible FAQ and FAQPage schema into line.
- Unify name, address and phone number across every location.
- Create llms.txt.
- State a price or a range.
None of it helps without a technical base. If pages are not getting indexed or load slowly on mobile, start there: SEO foundations. The structure for AI systems builds on top: AISO / AI search optimization.
FAQ
Why does ChatGPT not mention my business?
Your website is usually missing machine-readable statements about what you do, where you work and what it costs. AI systems read structure. When those facts sit only in body text, they stay a guess.
Does AI visibility replace classic SEO?
No. Without indexable pages, clean titles and a working sitemap, structure for AI systems achieves little. This work builds on SEO.
How fast will I see an effect?
There is no promised date and no promised mention in AI answers. What you can check is the structure: schema without errors, llms.txt in place, answers near the top, prices visible.
Do I have to publish my prices?
It helps. An AI system comparing two providers can describe the one that states scope and price more precisely. A starting price or a range is enough.
