Big websites are blocking AI agents. What that means for your small business website

Read in: Hrvatski English Deutsch

AI agents from OpenAI, Meta, Google, xAI and others are supposed to shop, book and compare on your customers’ behalf. According to The Verge (17 October 2026), a growing list of big websites is shutting them out. For a small business this is a choice, not just a headline: decide which AI visitors you want, and make sure the ones you want can actually reach you.

What happened

The Verge reports that users of agents such as Meta’s Muse, xAI’s Grok, OpenAI’s Dots and Instinct have run into blocks on popular websites. Yelp told TechCrunch it only allows AI agents that pay for its data licensing program. Delta Air Lines prevents agents from booking tickets for users, and JPMorgan Chase and Charles Schwab confirmed they block agents from accessing accounts for security reasons. Users also say Cars.com and Amtrak stopped working for their agents.

Amazon has fought agents since its dispute with Perplexity, and now objects to Meta’s Muse as well. Meanwhile, Meta has partnered with retailers such as Walmart, Gap, Sephora and Best Buy so Muse can shop there, and Shopify has opened its storefronts to AI agents. Even sites that don’t ban agents can block them by accident: anti-bot systems and Cloudflare’s AI-crawler blocking were built to stop scrapers, and agents trip the same alarms.

What it means for you

  1. Check whether you are blocking AI by accident. Many small business sites run behind Cloudflare or a security plugin. Look at your bot and AI-crawler settings and your robots.txt. Blocking AI training crawlers can be a fair choice, but blocking the assistants that answer customer questions may also make you invisible when someone asks an AI where to book or buy.
  2. Make the important facts easy to read. Agents and AI search tools struggle with prices hidden in images, opening hours buried in PDFs and booking forms that only work with a mouse. Clear text, structured data (schema.org) and a simple contact or booking path help humans and agents alike.
  3. Decide where agents may act, not just read. Reading your menu or price list is low risk. Booking, ordering or logging in is different: the big banks block agents for security reasons. Allow agents to read freely, keep payments and accounts behind normal human checks, and watch your logs for unusual automated traffic.
